Physiotherapist- Musculoskeletal & Women’s/ Pelvic Health

BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy; PGDipHSc Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy; MPNZ

Hi, I’m Laura. I started working at the Ulster Street clinic back in 2008 after completing my physiotherapy degree in Northern Ireland. Since then, I’ve completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and gone on to specialise in Women’s and Pelvic Health.

My career began in sports rehab, helping rugby and netball players recover from injury and return to play. But after becoming a mum, I realised how little support there was for women’s pelvic and musculoskeletal health. That’s what inspired me to combine both areas, so I can help women manage issues like pelvic organ prolapse, abdominal separation, pregnancy-related pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction in a more holistic way.

I’m passionate about helping women feel confident, strong, and informed, whether they’re preparing for birth, recovering after pregnancy, or getting back into movement, running, and sport. I’m originally from Belfast but now call Hamilton home, where I live with my Kiwi husband, our two kids, and our cat Tui. When I’m not in the clinic, you’ll find me out on the water (I compete in slalom water-skiing) or on an adventure with my family. And yes,  I’m a firm believer that a good Irish cup of tea can fix almost anything!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. What pregnancy-related issues does a physio treat?

    A. During pregnancy, it’s common to experience changes in posture, hormones, and joint stability that lead to discomfort or pain. A women’s health physiotherapist can help manage sacroiliac joint or pubic bone pain (SPD), low back pain, hip or tailbone pain, urinary leakage, constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, and diastasis recti (abdominal wall muscle separation). Physiotherapy can also support core and pelvic floor strengthening to improve stability and prepare your body for birth. Treatment often includes gentle manual therapy, posture and movement advice, and a tailored exercise plan designed to reduce pain and support a healthy, active pregnancy.

    Q. What can physiotherapy help with after giving birth?

    A. After childbirth, physiotherapy can play a vital role in your recovery. Many women experience pelvic floor dysfunction, abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti), or general weakness following birth. Other common concerns include pain in the lower back, hips, or tailbone, discomfort during intercourse, urinary leakage, constipation, haemorrhoids, and posture or shoulder tension from feeding and carrying a baby. A postnatal physiotherapist can help you restore strength and mobility safely, guiding your return to exercise, running, or sport with confidence. Treatment focuses on rebuilding pelvic floor and core strength, improving posture, and resolving pain so you can move comfortably again.

    Q. Can physiotherapy help with bladder or bowel problems?
    A. Yes, physiotherapy can be highly effective for bladder and bowel issues such as urinary leakage, frequency, urgency, or constipation. Your physiotherapist will help identify the underlying cause and teach you strategies for improving control and function. Treatment may include pelvic floor exercises, lifestyle and posture education, and techniques to retrain bladder and bowel habits, helping you regain comfort and confidence in daily life.

    Q. What is pelvic organ prolapse and how can physiotherapy help?
    A. Pelvic organ prolapse happens when the pelvic floor muscles become weakened or overstretched, allowing one or more pelvic organs to descend lower in the pelvis. Physiotherapy can help by strengthening the pelvic floor, improving posture and breathing patterns, and teaching you safe lifting and exercise techniques. With the right support and strengthening plan, many women find their symptoms significantly improve without surgery.

    Q. Can physiotherapy help with pelvic or sexual pain?
    A. Yes. Physiotherapy can help with pelvic or tailbone pain, discomfort during intercourse, or general pelvic floor dysfunction. Treatment often includes gentle manual therapy to release tension, relaxation and breathing exercises to calm overactive muscles, and education to help you understand what’s causing your pain and how to manage it. The goal is to restore comfort, confidence, and normal function so you can enjoy movement and intimacy again.

    Q. What treatments might my physiotherapist use?
    A. Treatment is always personalised to your body and goals. It may include manual therapy for the pelvis, spine, and hips; strengthening and stabilisation exercises for the core and pelvic floor; relaxation techniques to ease tension; and education on bladder, bowel, and lifestyle habits. Your physiotherapist will also provide guidance on posture, breathing, and movement to help you return safely to work, exercise, and everyday life.
