GLA:D® at Active
THE BEST FIRST TREATMENT FOR HIP AND KNEE ARTHRITIS
What is GLA:D® ?
GLA:D®, or Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark, is an education and exercise programme developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms.
GLA:D® uses education and exercise to help with daily activities. You will work on strengthening your body, as well as learning to move correctly and manage symptoms to improve pain
What are the benefits of GLA:D®?
Research from the GLA:D® programme in Denmark found symptom progression of arthritis reduces by 32%. Other outcomes include less pain, reduced use of joint-related pain killers, and less people on sick leave. GLA:D® participants also reported high levels of satisfaction with the programme and increased levels of physical activity 12 months after starting the programme.
The programme is unique in that the education and exercises provided can be applied to everyday activities, ensuring participants develop skills to self-manage their osteoarthritis. By strengthening and improving confidence with exercise, participants develop better capacity to become or stay active, prevent symptom progression and reduce pain
What does GLA:D® involve?
GLA:D® New Zealand training consists of:
- Two education sessions which teach you about Osteoarthritis, how the GLA:D New Zealand exercises improve joint stability, and how to retain this improved joint stability outside of the program
- An initial consult/assessment to gather baseline walking and joint function measurements, and to help outline goals and expectations of the program
- Group training sessions lead by one of our three GLA:D practitioners, held twice a week for six weeks to improve muscle control of the joint which leads to reduction in symptoms and improved quality of life
- A review at the three months to discuss progress and goals
Who can participate in GLA:D® New Zealand?
This program is for all individuals who experience any hip and/or knee osteoarthritis symptoms, regardless of severity.
