Prostate Cancer Recovery Programme in Christchurch
Active Health proudly presents an evidence-based preparation and recovery programme for prostate cancer patients written personally by our cancer rehabilitation/pelvic health team. This Prostate Cancer Recovery Programme uses a proactive approach to optimise continence, erectile function, functional capacity, wellbeing, and quality of life following radical prostatectomy or other treatments for prostate cancer. This approach has been proven effective in reducing post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction, which are the two main side effects of this surgery. Ideally the programme will be started before medical treatment to help you prepare for what is ahead and then guide you through recovery, but it may also be started following your medical treatments at any stage. We work with each person individually to shape recovery to your specific work, fitness and sport demands.
Key features of the programme include:
- Prehabilitation (preparation for treatment)
- Rehabilitation (recovery following treatment)
- Biofeedback with real-time ultrasound for pelvic floor muscles
- Individualised pelvic floor muscle assessment and exercise progression
- Pelvic floor muscle training in functional positions and activities
- Prescribed aerobic and resistance training based on individual capacity and goals for returning to activity and sports
- Bladder training and lifestyle adaptation
- Penile rehabilitation education for sexual function
- Led by physiotherapists certified in male pelvic health and cancer rehabilitation
If financial assistance is required, you may register through the Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation indicating Active Health as your chosen clinic. See Individualised Cancer Rehabilitation for more information.
