Acupuncture is the use of fine filamentous needles which are inserted under the skin. It is no longer thought to be alternative therapy, but is described as a complimentary therapy. Combined with physiotherapy it is highly useful for many musculoskeletal conditions or injuries.

Recent research has provided us with good evidence that acupuncture can be effective and because of this research, the medical profession accepts it as a valid treatment modality for many conditions. The World Health Organisation reviewed controlled trials and in 2002 stated that it could be used effectively to treat the following: -

  • Migraines and headaches
  • Facial pain
  • Temporomandibular (TMJ) dysfunction
  • Knee pain
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  •  Shoulder pain
  • Post-operative pain
  • Sciatica
  • Sprains
  • Tennis elbow
  • Hay fever

… and much more

Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a modern form of acupuncture used to target musculoskeletal issues. It is useful in reducing muscle spasm or tightness, can reduce pain and can promote healing. Dry needling is particularly effective for: -

  • Shoulder pain
  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Hip or gluteal pains
  • Repeated strains such as hamstring, quadriceps or calf strains
  • Achilles tendon issues
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis or Golfers' elbow

A detailed assessment will be carried out to establish an accurate diagnosis, and a comprehensive management plan recommended. Treatment may include acupuncture, dry needling, cupping, ear acupuncture, hands-on physiotherapy techniques and exercise-based rehabilitation.

If referral to other treatment providers is thought to be of use, then this can be done too. Active Health's philosophy is to not only to treat symptoms using sound techniques but to target all contributing factors to maximise treatment effect and prevent re-occurrences.
